There is a big difference between most of the ozone generators out there and a professional ozone generator.  The ability to do the job right the first time requires equipment that will hit ozone shock levels of 6 to 12 PPM as quickly as possible.  Of course, all the ozone generator promoters claim that their machine is the best, but the reality is that their equipment does not live up to the boast.  Here are some helpful tips to guide you in your decision.

Nicholas Tesla is one of the best known ozone experts.  His experiments with AC type electricity was at odds with Edison’s commitment to DC power.  We are all familiar with the Tesla coil and the static bulb shooting fingers of electricity if you touch the bulb’s surface.  He become well accustom to ozone that was created when AC voltage was stepped up by a transformer and producing sparks or a blue glow.  This is what is know as the corona effect.

Many current ozone generators still rely on the corona effect to make ozone.  The oldest way to make a corona ozone generator was to use a stainless mesh wired to a transformer.  The two power sources from the transformer were connected to two wire mesh screen separated by an insulating barrier like mica.  This is now dated technology that is limited in what it can produce and quickly starts losing its ozone-producing ability with use.

The next step forward was improved transformers that were wired to ozone cells made of thin porcelain and carefully coated on both sides with a nickel-type design resembling six lines on the corona side.  These units were often a paired set of fo 3.5 milligram/hr (mg/hr) cells.  One transformer and two cells could produce 7 grams or 7000 milligrams of ozone.  

For the less informed, grams is the volume of ozone produced.  Grams would be like a pint of liquid.  When the volume is introduced into a room, it dilutes.  We then measure the saturation or strength of the gas in Parts Per Million (PPM).  In a nutshell, the more volume (grams) of ozone the equipment can produce, the higher the PPM will be.  When the equipment can raise the level to 6-12 PPM, this is what many call “Ozone Shock Level“.  The physical evident is the “Blue Haze” that can be seen in low light or when a flashlight is used in the room.

High ozone levels are very useful to kill mold, destroy odors, sanitize, and kill pests.  It is also a respiratory irritant requiring a carbon filter mask and caution when entering the room.   

What is ridiculous to imagine is old style, stainless steel mesh machines, like Maxblaster, producing enough ozone to reach the ozone shock levels.  The 7G units can be ganged up in a unit to produce, 28G, 35G, and 42G; but the expense and weight will be an issue.

In 2014, we saw the introduction of new transformer and plates rated at 10G.  The engineering was more than more power.  The design of the plates changed as well.  The new honeycomb design plates were tied to advanced transformers that produced a higher level of ozone (ten grams) and allowed for 30, 40, 60 gram/hr ozone generators that we quite portable.  The new 10G ozone transformers also included short proof circuitry that would prevent any overheating that sometimes happened when the 7G units failed.
