Is bigger, better?  There is a certain amount of hype about the strength of the fan used in ozone generators.  One well-know Internet promoter uses a spa fan adapted into his toolbox system.  The claim is that the fan actually helps the ozone production of the unit.  Well, bigger is not better; and this illustrates how many people are easily misled by these braggadocios claims.

The problem for this fan (reported to us by actual users) is that the fan is not adapter for a high ozone environment.  There are rubber parts that eventually disintegrate making the unit useless.  Apparently, no one took a critical look at the design and criteria for a reliable ozone generator.  This is one of the reasons that All Ozone submitted our systems to the full review of the National Ozone Association (NOIA and earned the NOAI Approved® certification.

But, is it smart to push large volumes of air (CFM or cubic feet per minute) through the ozone generator?  Actual testing of the PPM output of units have demonstrated to excessive air in the unit adversely affects ozone production.  It has been referred to a “blowing the spark off the plates.”  Ozone machines turn ordinary oxygen into ozone via an electric corona or spark from surfaces charges with high voltage.  Think of turning an ember into a fire.  Feeding oxygen slowly to the ember will create a fire, but a blast of air would blow the ember out.  It is a delicate balance.

All ozone uses fans proven to work in ozone atmosphere because there is not rubber or elastomers to be harmed.  The air flow is very good, but not too much.  This might explain why our units not only have tremendous PPM output, but are capable of taking 1000 cu ft test rooms to well above the 10 PPM levels that kill germs, destroy odors, and kill mold.  

On the other hand, ozone is lazy or heavier than air.  When using ozone to treat a building or office, the use of external fans is very helpful.  Most professionals bring in air movement fans to push the ozone through the facility.  There is no issue affecting the ozone generator when exterior fans are used.  Also, turn on the AC and the furnace fan to get the ozone through the duct system and into other areas.

The best way to determine is a fan is too strong is to measure the ozone output at various air speed levels.  There is a sweet spot where there is good ozone output and air speed.  All Ozone took the time to address this issue.  So, avoid the hype of a large fan and focus on the actual PPM output as measured by an independent source.  We all know how to cheat the system.  An independent review is the only way to know that an ozone generator is as good as the brag.
