To keep this subject on point, the ability to remove the death odor seems to fall in three stages.  First, is cleaning.  Second is debridement (removing tainted goods and material).  Third, is odor elimination.  You simply cannot short-circuit the process.  Most trauma scene/death scene cleanup services know that basics of the death scene process.  However, our focus is on the final step and the use of a powerful ozone generator.  

Once the building is cleaned and all tainted materials are removed, the death odor can literally last for years afterwards.  This smell permeates the building and can remain even after walls and flooring are torn out and replaced.  The prime time to apply ozone in in the final stages of the cleanup.  When everything is down to the bare essentials, then it is time to use the ozone gasout.  

An ozone gasout requires no less than 10,000 mg.hr of ozone generation for every 1000 sq ft.  This is a lot, so a 5000 sq ft home may need 50,000 mg/hr of ozone generation.  These treatments may be applied for cycles of 6-8 hours over two to three days.  Ozone is a topical treatment that works its way into the ugliest odors.  However, there are numerous cases where a unrelenting death odor has resulting in bulldozing the house because nothing else worked.  

Before you bring in the bulldozer, why not apply ozone to the building.  One reported case in St Petersburg, Florida dealt with an unrecoverable home with a death smell after the best efforts of the cleanup service.  Before the order was given to bulldoze the house, the contractor ran four cycles of 8 hours with shock-level ozone.  When he was done, the house was free of odors and could be remodeled to make it habitable.

Ozone has been used to “Knock Down” odors, but this is better done with UAD Neutralizer, a misting odor neutralizer product.  Once the cleanup and debridement is accomplished, then bring in the ozone generators.  In humid climates, be sure to run a dehumidifier at the same time to maximize the performance of the the ozone generators.  With strong and persistent odors, do not think that one cycle of treatment is enough.  Cycles allow the deeply embedded odors to come out and the ozone to reach deeper into the hidden recesses.
